MISCELLANEOUS

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is situated on both banks of the Danube, the second largest  river in Europe, and at the foot of the Small Carpathians mountains (Malé Karpaty). Bratislava lies at the borders of three countries, neighboring with Hungary in the south and Austria in the west. In administrative terms, the town is divided in 5 districts and 17 city parts.

The climate zone of Bratislava is characterized by distinct differences between temperatures in summer and in winter. The average day temperature in the mid of June is above 20ºC with occasional showers. However, the high temperature strokes up to 35  ºC are not excluded.

Currency exchange, Credit cards

The official currency in Slovakia is the Slovak Crown (slovenská koruna, Sk, international abbreviation SKK). It can be purchased in banks and from licensed exchangers. Exchange facilities are at the airport (commission 8%), railway and bus station, department stores, and the hotels and in numerous exchange offices (no commission!). It might be necessary for you to show your passport. The exchange rate is about SKK 30.9 for 1 USD and SKK 37.3 for 1 EUR (in March 2006). When leaving the country, you may reexchange Slovak currency.

Major credit cards are accepted in banks, hotels, first-class restaurants and specialized shops. Please make inquiries before asking services.
